In the category of mundane-until-you-really-need-it sits the spare magazine holster. Nobody who is carrying one as a part of their concealed carry gear shows it off to a friend or talks much about the pro’s and con’s of it. It’s just there, holding a spare magazine, waiting. Of course, if you experience a situation where you have to go for a spare magazine, then clearly the drama has escalated to beyond serious. Suddenly, then, the spare magazine holster can become a life saver.

So it behooves those who carry concealed not just to carry a reload — in my case, a spare magazine — but also to do so in a manner putting the reload in the most tactically advantageous position available. For me, that’s weak side, in my left pocket. Well, it was until I found this new mag holster. Now I carry it on my belt.

Going from pocket to belt is no revelation. But it is if you’ve gotten lazy — as I had — and it took a great piece of gear to wake you up to a better way of doing something.

Enter Multi Holsters Elite Quick Ship Magazine Holster. This $26.95 mag holster wears outside the waistband and holds a spare magazine at the ready. It does this really well.

And that’s it.

The carrier of course fits the magazine it was made for — perfectly. The clip holds the carrier against the body — tightly. The adjustable tension screws allow for varying amounts of friction on the magazine. Mine are set to what I can only describe as “medium” — enough to hold the magazine firmly in place, even if I’m standing on my head or rolling through a fall or a fight, but loose enough to draw without the magazine clip pulling my belt up, causing delay.

I don’t normally wear a mag holster out in the open like this. I just wanted you to see it on my belt…

Clipped to my belt, outside the waistband, on my weak side, the Multi Holsters mag holster also offers a balancing effect to the gun on my strong side. It disappears under an untucked shirt and I can feel it there with the inside of my weak side forearm. No more fumbling in my weak side front pocket to make sure the mag is there, rounds pointed in the right direction, and so on. No, I’ve had a revelation, again, about the importance of this mundane piece of gear.
