Spyderco Just Keeps On
Pushing The Design Envelope.

There’s one thing you can always count on in the cutlery industry: Expect the unexpected from Spyderco. Since the inception of that little hole in the blade some 40-plus years ago, founder Sal Glesser has urged himself and his team to not just push the envelope, but to make it bigger. As part of that process the company has collaborated with custom knifemakers whose work is both edgy and innovative. The little gem you see pictured here, the Serge Panchenko Dog Tag, is a prime example of that philosophy.

Serge is an American knifemaker who immigrated to the US from Ukraine when he was 8 years of age. In the past several years he has built a rabid following—much due to his incredible knack for designing and making some of the coolest small knives on the planet. Spyderco’s factory version of his Dog Tag has a green-anodized titanium frame with an aluminum backstop and pivot cap done up in blue. The 1.23-inch Sheepsfoot blade is made of top-shelf CPM S30V stainless steel and has an attractive stonewashed gray finish. A Fuller groove and signature Spydie-hole topping off the blade are signature features. A ball-bearing detent holds the blade in the open position.

On the surface the Dog Tag is an incredibly stylish piece of jewelry, but don’t sell its functionality short. The Sheepsfoot is one of the best “working” blades ever, and this is a rock solid little knife. It will open corrugated packages, cut cord and score cardboard with ease. It’s not going to replace your pocket tactical for self-defense, but it can serve as a last ditch hideaway knife strung around the neck on a chain, or stashed away in a purse or pocket. Retail for the Dog Tag is $119.95, not bad for a very cool piece of jewelry that can also perform daily chores—and perhaps even get you out of a pinch!
