You’ve probably heard someone say it. Maybe you’ve said it. Here’s the scenario: You’re going out to run a quick errand and don’t want to fuss with strapping on whatever gun and holster you normally wear. But you of course want to carry something. So, the saying goes, you’ll just “toss a J-frame in your pocket.”

DSC_0693That’s fine and we’ve all done it. Just gotta be careful what we mean by that. After all, today’s pockets are already jammed with stuff.

My list of everyday carry items, for example, usually includes an Apple iPhone, Emerson knife, Vanquest wallet, Steinhart watch (on my wrist, of course), and my car keys. Sometimes I add a flashlight. I don’t have a lot of room for much else.

DSC_0689The J-frame I toss around is a 15-ounce S&W 442 (.38 Special +P) with a reload, usually Federal Hydra-Shoks in a Bianchi speed strip or a 5-Star Firearms speedloader.

Of course I don’t literally toss the 442 in my pocket but I do place it quickly and easily in my pocket using a DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster (retail $25.99).

DSC_0684The Nemesis holster features a low-friction pack cloth on the inside (for a fast draw) with a sticky exterior that keeps the holster stable and in pocket when drawing. The holster stands up firmly, hides the gun’s outline effectively, but conforms gently to the gun and somewhat to the shape your leg. The looser the pants it is in, the better, but you need to be watchful that your pants pocket cut doesn’t expose the butt of the gun. But that’s for normal pants and jeans. In a cargo pocket or a jacket pocket, the Nemesis holds and hides the 442 perfectly.

DSC_0685Usually the Nemesis and J-frame resides in my front right pocket. With nothing else in there, I can have a clear in and out for the 442 and nothing that could interfere or get hung up on the trigger or anything else. All my other stuff resides in other pockets or on my belt.

In the right pocket, the Nemesis proves to be an excellent means to safely and securely carry the ubiquitous J-frame, a gun many have turned to for years as a primary or backup. Carrying it in the DeSantis Nemesis is more than “tossing it in your pocket,” but not much more.
