I’ve argued for carrying a J-frame inside the waistband and I’ll do it again. This time, I’m also going to show you a couple pieces of gear you should get right now.

Again, a J-frame is a feasible pocket gun but I like it just as well, if not better, inside the waistband. It’s light, small, and with the right holster, comfy to carry and easy to draw. Moreover, if I’m carrying it IWB, then I can upgrade the stocks to something just slightly longer than the standard boot grip — something that can accommodate my pinky finger.

So here are the two pieces of gear you should check out: a Cover 6 IWB holster and a set of Altamont stocks — specifically the S&W J Round Bateleur Super Rosewood Crocback/Stipple with Laser Logo LCSW (which is very fun to say).

First, the holster. Cover 6 gear is made in the U.S. of A from high quality cowhide. This holster features a single pivot point on the clip, mounted low. As such, you can wear this holster in a variety of locations, including cross-draw when driving. The leather is soft enough to be comfortable yet firm enough to keep a good grip on the gun under a real gun belt. Nothing digs into your body. And you can point the J frame stocks up, up, and out of the way, virtually eliminating printing.

Retailing for $60, the Cover 6 holster for this J frame is similar to other IWB holsters but with a winning combination of versatility and comfort. When it arrived, I wondered where it had been all my life.

Second, the stocks. Remember, if you’re carrying a J-frame in an IWB holster, you’ve got a little more space available for a slightly longer stocks. This can translate into much more purchase (gripping quality), even over the Smith’s very good two-finger, rubber boot grip (which I’ve always loved). The problem with beautiful stocks like the Altamonts is, or rather, has been a decrease in purchase. In other words, they can be slippery. Thankfully, these grips (retail $60) feature a great texture/grip pattern, including a Backstrap Crocback Texture ($10 extra). So slippery-ness is gone and purchase is solid.

Inside the Cover 6 holster, the J-frame and the Altamont stocks rests against my side with comfortable smoothness, offering a combat grip and an easy draw. They’re good accessories, individually. But they’re even better as a combo.

I’m glad I’ve got ’em and, if you get ’em right now, I think you will be, too.
