Realities Of Prison
Most citizens invited to tour a prison are curious and nervous about the experience. Some arrive for the tour only to turn around afraid and leave before entering the gates. Those feelings seem to be normal reactions based on John Q. Public’s assumptions about the prison environment. By watching television they think every prison is wrought with violence and every inmate is planning an escape attempt worthy of an HBO mini-series. They may also believe all prison employees are corrupt and brutal. You likely know John Q. is way off base, but his assumptions based on what the media tells him are his reality.
Experienced corrections officers and career criminals also have feelings when walking into a prison. These feelings range from calm to doom, depending on the prison. If you’ve toured more than one prison in your career you know what I mean. You can feel when something is about to blow and you can also tell when a prison is safe. These feelings are based on experience rather than television shows designed to entertain and sensationalize.
