Guns are arguably the most durable of goods, most of them reliably functional and effective for decades and often passed down from generation to generation while being fired and admired. Holsters rarely share the same durable-ness as the guns they hold but there are some out there. One of the newer holsters sure to provide dozens of years of service, generation after generation, is the Exodus Gunleather Paddle Holster you see here. It’s a very functional concealment holster — low-profile, comfortable and secure. And, in Cape Buffalo style, a good looking holster, isn’t it? I sure think so. In fact, while it does concealed carry duty superbly, it is just a shame to hide it. So I show it off, appropriately, whenever I can.
For the record, the gun enjoying the ride in the Exodus is a Nighthawk Custom T4, an all-steel 1911 chambered in 9mm. Loaded, it’s 2.49 lbs so it’s no lightweight. More about that in a minute.
Paddle holsters, as you know, have a reputation for easy on and easy off. Many, however, allow a gun to protrude too far from your side, making concealment more difficult. The Exodus, however, offers a decently slim profile, and combined with an FBI cant, hides this T4 well under a slightly oversized t-shirt.
The T4 fits the Exodus precisely (or is it vice versa?). Horsehide leather in and out, the holster’s friction on the gun rates a near perfect 10, as if it were custom made for it. And, actually, it is.
Slide the paddle inside your waistband, over a real gun belt, and you’re ready to rock. A leather tab on the gun side of the paddle helps keep the paddle in place when carrying and of course drawing. The soft backing interacts with your side, increasing stability and comfort. Leather covers the T4’s entire slide, protecting you or your clothing from contact.
Now, despite the gun’s weight, the Exodus paddle does well at distributing it over my gun belt — a necessary part of carrying this gun and holster. At about 3:30 or 4 o’clock on my waist, my shirt drapes over it and my arm helps conceal it.
Prices start at $175 for standard horsehide and Exodus will gladly discuss making any custom tweaks you desire. Warning: If you get one, you’ll want to show it off to your friends and keep it in the family forever.
