So, you say you want to be a traffic cop? Grab your cite book, calculator and CAD program, and read on. Of course, being a traffic cop is about more than simply being a heartless wretch and writing a stack of tickets (although it’s an awesome side bonus). On the contrary, there’s a ton of extra training involved if you truly wish to embrace what it is to be a traffic cop.
Here’s a brief list of the classes you may attend: Basic and Intermediate Traffic Investigations (speed from skid), Advanced Traffic Investigations, Accident Reconstruction (I and II), CRUSH (speed from crush/deformation), Auto/Ped (speed of vehicles based on throw distance of the pedestrian) and Auto/Motorcycle. Each class is either a 40- or 80-hour course. All told, you’ll be looking at somewhere in the neighborhood of 400 hours of training.
