From the “very handy and you just never know” category, here’s a survival kit you can literally take with you wherever you go. The Brite-Strike Survival Key Fob with Line Light is small enough to fit in your pocket or clip to your belt or keychain. And it’s light enough you’ll probably not even realize you’re carrying it. But packed in it is decent survival kit:

  • Fire starter rod
  • Jute tinder
  • Mini knife wrapped with super thin Kevlar line (200 lb.)
  • Two fishing hooks
  • 20 feet fishing line
  • 1 Line Light™ (Green)
  • Approx. 12 Feet Mil Spec Paracord

Most of the gear is hidden or, rather stored, in foil and then wrapped in the paracord. Use it only in an emergency and then plan to store it someplace else; once you unwrap it from its paracord housing, it’s not going back easily. But that’s the point: You’ll have it in a neat package and with you virtually anywhere you go. Hint: While this survival kit may be useful, leave it home when you travel via air. I doubt the TSA will approve of the knife, even if wrapped up inside.

About the gear: Obviously it’s a minimalist kit. The mini knife isn’t bad — it’s wicked sharp with scoring in the metal allowing you to break off 1/4-inch sections at a time to expose a new, sharper edge — but I hope you’ll already be carrying a “real” knife in your pocket.

One of the best features of the kit is the Line Light — a green light that flashes intermittently or steady, depending on a button press or two. String it up or stick it to you, your pack, or something else using the adhesive backing. Also very useful: 12 feet of paracord and 1 foot of Kevlar line serving as the blade’s “handle.” Actually, the twine and fire starter rod would prove eminently helpful when you need to start a fire fast. And don’t forget the fishing line and hooks in case the situation degrades to where you need to fish for food.

All that, packed into nothing more than a keychain, for $40.
