G2G-2

In the July 2013 issue we showed you Maxpedition’s first folding knife, the FEROX — a light, sweet bargain at $29.99. Their second folder, the Excelsa, kicks strength and quality up several notches and it too gives great bang for the bucks.

This slick, simple framelock is precision machined from 6AI4V titanium alloy. The blade is D2 tool steel, cryogenically and heat-treated to 58-60HRc — in other words, damn tough. It’s a flat grind to full height “for optimal edge geometry,” meaning you get virtually no drag cutting through almost anything. All the hardware is stainless steel. The thumb stud is ramped at an inboard angle and scored, which makes opening the blade fast and certain, even with gloves on. The strong pocket clip carries fairly deep and allows for tip-up or tip-down carry.

The Excelsa comes in two sizes. We tested the 3.6″ blade model. The smaller model has a 2.9″ blade. Fit, finish and function is absolutely outstanding. We think this knife compares easily with folders at twice the price: $139.99 large, $119.99 small. For more info: www.americancop.com/company/maxpedition
