The Newest Cop Optics

By Dave Douglas

We live by our eyes. Pretty much everything a cop does these days requires observation and reporting. Whether you know it or not, if you have as little as six months behind the wheel of a police car your observations skills are at least double that of the public. If they’re not, get out now because what you don’t see can kill you.

Even the best observer can use a little help now and then and the best way to augment your bare-eyed observation skills is to enhance them with quality glass. That glass can be nestled atop your patrol rifle, precision long gun or in the patrol car on the seat next to you.

Optics companies are competing for your business and in doing so are continually developing newer and better optics.

Here are some of the better of this year’s crop of glass.

Burris SixX

New models of the SixX Series for 2010 are the 2X-12X 40mm, and the 2X-12X 50mm — both sport illuminated reticles. Each model is now available with either the German 3P#4 Illuminated or the proprietary Burris Ballistic Plex Illuminated reticle. These compact profile scopes represent the latest in optical refinement and technology, while delivering the features and optical value Burris has long been known for. Current and new models are available in matte finish.

A new feature in the SixX Series is a fast diopter adjustment. It focuses a shooter’s diopter adjustment approximately five times faster than earlier scopes. New models also offer generous eye relief of 3.5″ to 4.0″. These fully multicoated and index-matched lenses are finished with StormCoat to shed moisture in damp conditions by reducing surface tension on exterior lenses. Flip-up scope covers are included with SixX Series models to further protect the scope from harsh conditions. A rubber power ring allows for fast magnification changes. Additionally, the SixX Series riflescopes are waterproof, shockproof, fogproof, meticulously crafted in the USA and warranted forever. Burris believes its SixX Series scopes will far exceed your expectations.

EOTech XPS3-2

EOTech’s new XPS3-2 features a single transverse CR123 battery to reduce sight length. The single CR123 provides three times the battery life and only requires 2.75″ of rail space. Average battery life at full brightness is roughly 500-600 hours.

A simple O-ring and tethered cap allow a better seal and the battery compartment is separated from the base allowing it to hover over the rifle’s delta ring.

It’s available with three different reticle configurations and in a night vision compatible version, the XPS3. The non-NV compatible sight is designated XPS2.

The G23.FTS 3X Magnifier is the 2nd generation of L3 EOTech magnifiers and offers .5″ more eye relief. Windage and elevation adjustments are inside the optic rather than the mount. Fewer moving parts make it even more stable. The G23.FTS has an ARMS release lever allowing quick removal of both the optic and the mount.

US Optics

The application of optical systems on rifles specifically designed for the law enforcement marksman is a true fit for US Optics. Every optical system is built from the ground up with end user input ensuring the best most accurate system goes out the door.

With a limited lifetime warranty attached to each scope it’s no wonder why US Optics is chosen time and time again by law enforcement agencies.

US Optics original design and engineering platform was for military application. But, early on the design team at US Optics recognized a need for flexibility. They gathered input from top shooters and marksmen from the law enforcement community and focused on the challenges of meeting these needs.

Their SLIM-LINE version of its most popular military line of optical systems was a direct result of input from law enforcement professionals. Over the years the common feedback that came from shooters in LE was that US Optics scopes were too big and awkward for applications in an urban environment. They met this challenge and significantly reduced the profile without compromising features. Simply stated, law enforcement professionals get the durability, repeatability and reliability of a military optical system.

You could darn near hammer nails with these scopes. They are built to last in any environment and that includes the trunk of your cruiser.
