What Have You Been Missing In The Dark?

You can’t shoot what you can’t see and wouldn’t you agree — you shouldn’t? Today’s explosion of high-tech goodies means there’s more lights and lasers in the spotlight than ever before. Sorry, couldn’t help it. From hand held, weapon lights/lasers and red dots to hot new light technology, we have it here!

The LaserMax GripSense (light/laser) activates when you grip the gun, with or without gloves on. It’s kinda’ magic, even. Key innovations include a fully programmable operating mode, a Quick-Change Battery Hatch and a full three-hour battery life. There’s also an inadvertent time out feature to prevent battery drain. The slim design minimizes print making the GripSense a great choice for concealed carry. About $200 for S&W Shields and Ruger’s LC9/LC380 series so far.

The Streamlight Bandit is an ultra-lightweight headlamp (with a hat clip too). At only 1.3 oz. it’s feathery and the USB charger works fast and easily. Runtime is 2 hours at 180 lumens (bright enough for about anything) and 9.5 hours at 35 lumens. It’s simple, easy to use and handy. Perfect, if you ask me. About $25 — cheap.

Crimson Trace’s Laserguard Pro laser/light combo uses Instinctive Activation, a feature designed to activate the laser and light when the firearm is held in a normal firing grip — and when the user is ready to fire. The light can be operated in either of four modes: laser + light, laser only, light only and laser and light strobe. An easy-to-access mode button makes switching between modes easy. From about $249 up depending upon the model.

The TruGlo TruPoint has a sleek style due to the integration of the light and laser in a single-housing tube. It has interchangeable back plates for right- or left-hand use and the laser is available in red or green. Mounting to a standard Picatinny or Weaver-style rail is easy with the Quick-detach lever. Light is a 200-peak lumen output. Around $85 or so.

The Umarex Optical Dynamics OD40 completely rewrites the book on long-range ultra-precise hand-held lights. It has a revolutionary patented photonics lens system called CALS (Collimated Amplified Lens System). The 1,056 Lumen pure HD light emitted has no shadows or fading and can be focused to have a sharp edge to the light projected with no “over-spray” of the beam. It’s honestly one of the most amazing things I’ve seen. It has a red and green lens and is geared for varminters or anyone needing intense, focused light. Look for more on this light later in Handgunner. It’s so new, price isn’t set yet but, we predict it’s going to seriously affect the future of lights.

The Leupold DeltaPoint Pro is made of a lightweight aluminum housing covered by steel, rugged but lightweight. Leupold’s patented Motion Sensor Technology picks up your movement and activates the illumination. The battery compartment is tool-less making battery changes easy and quick. The 1 MOA elevation and windage adjustments eliminate adjustment lock screws. Everyday shooters like you and me can enjoy faster target acquisition and enter the modern age at the same time! Cost varies so check ’em out.
