Without a doubt, one of the best ways to get the most out of your range time is to spend your time shooting — not searching for gear. Just as you’d invest in a quality holster, you should also invest in a quality range bag. A good one needs to be large enough to handle several handguns, a few hundred rounds of ammunition, at least a half-dozen magazines and have numerous pockets for all the extra gear you always manage to need. All too often I see so-called range bags that are only large enough for one gun and one box of ammo.

I also prefer the bag have a wide center compartment with zippers down both sides, allowing full access inside. It should have a couple padded outer pockets for storing handguns and an area with magazine loops for storing and organizing magazines. Of course, it has to be well made and extremely durable; a range bag gets pretty heavy when loaded with all this gear.

G-Outdoors

I’m impressed with the G.P.S. Wild About Shooting series of shooting and range bags from G-Outdoors. These bags satisfy every feature I’m looking for in my range bag. The large- and medium-sized bags are constructed of heavy-duty nylon and have padded sides and bottoms to protect my guns during transport. Each has a large main compartment with a wraparound zip opening, offering plenty of space to hold my guns and other bulk items. Large zippered pockets on both ends and the front, complete with mesh compartments and nylon magazine slots, help keep things neat and tidy. There are a host of other small compartments, including a velour-lined pouch for your glasses, all labeled to make finding your stuff easier.

I wonder if G-Outdoors stacked the medium and large range bags to come up with the Handgunner Backpack. It looks like a backpack, just as the name suggests, and features a high-density foam gun cradle you slide into the bottom compartment of the pack. It’s pretty slick. It’ll hold four small- to medium-sized guns vertically without the need for each to be in a separate gun pouch. The upper part of the pack features all the labeled compartments, pockets and pouches previously described.

Their largest tote is called the Large Rolling Range Bag and is sure to be a huge hit. It’s similar to a rolling carry-on suitcase in that it has a telescoping handle and two large wheels, but that’s where the similarities end. The bag features an extra-large main compartment and more pockets, compartments and holder areas than you could imagine. I think there’s even enough room in this thing for the kitchen sink. Thank goodness for the handle and wheels — getting all that gear from my truck to the range is a breeze.
And if you or someone you know is into a specific shooting sport like sporting clays or black powder, G-Outdoors has specific bags to suit those needs too. Check around online, prices vary.
