Every recruit gets an ethics class. But the test comes later, on the street. While there is certainly an academic definition of ethics the real-world definition is simple: Ethics are the backbone of who you are. The decisions you make not only impact the rest of your career, but the profession as a whole.

As a reserve officer you have lots of power. You can influence how citizens, other officers and administrators view all reserve officers. At the same time you carry the same load as every other officer when you pin on the badge and strap on the duty belt. You are held to a higher standard. Are you up to it?

Not too long ago, an American president had a sexual relationship with a subordinate, lied about it under oath, went to trial (that’s what impeachment is), admitted he’d done these things and was still allowed to keep his job. What do you think would happen to you if you did any of those things? A certain part of your anatomy would be in a sling and your career options would not include getting paid $250,000 to give a speech. And, what would your odds of being rehired full-time be?
